A friend suggested I start my own blog. This could be due to the fact that many of my Face book posts require one to click on “more” in order to read the entire thing. For others who need “more” room to speak their minds, welcome!
Many years ago, when I was going to a basket/make-up/crystal/plastic container (fill in blank) party at a neighbor’s home, I may have complained to my sister. She had a very interesting thought that has changed the way I attend these functions and how I attend the world at large. She said that when she is doubtful about the level of interest she will have, she attends as Jane Goodall with a mind for anthropological exploration. The key is to have an open mind and endeavor to understand the history, language, customs and interesting facts of the culture you are visiting. First of all, this made me laugh and put me in a better mood to attend. Second, it worked!!! Instead of making a mental journal of “see, this is why I didn’t want to come” anecdotes, I sat back and enjoyed learning that these get-togethers have very little to do with baskets.
I realize now that I have always been a social explorer. I truly enjoy people and hearing their stories. I love to people watch and find that what I see almost always turns into a teachable moment for me. Yes, people can be frustrating at times but I pray for creativity and a good sense of humor, never patience. Patience is boring, humor is fun! I only hope that others will pray for a sense of humor so that they can enjoy me too.
